§ 273. Salary of clerks to justices of supreme court.  1. Each of the\nclerks appointed by the justices of the supreme court in the first\njudicial district, pursuant to subdivision one of section one hundred\nand fifty-seven of this chapter, shall receive as salary a sum to be\nfixed by the justices thereof, or a majority of them, not designated as\njustices of the appellate division.\n  2. Each of the confidential clerks to the justices of the supreme\ncourt in the second judicial district, other than justices of the\nappellate division, shall receive an annual salary, the amount of which\nshall be fixed by a majority of said justices. The money required to pay\nsuch salaries shall be raised and paid in the same manner as the money\nrequired to pay salaries of attendants and officers of the supreme court\nin said district.\n  2-a. Each of the confidential clerks appointed by the justices of the\nsupreme court in the eleventh judicial district shall receive as a\nsalary a sum to be fixed by the justices thereof, or a majority of them,\nnot designated as justices of the appellate division. The money required\nto pay such salaries shall be raised and paid in the same manner\nrequired to pay salaries of attendants and officers of the supreme court\nin said districts.\n  3. Each of the confidential clerks to the justices of the supreme\ncourt in the tenth judicial district, other than justices of the\nappellate division residing in the tenth judicial district, shall\nreceive an annual salary to be fixed by the justices of the supreme\ncourt residing in the tenth judicial district other than justices of the\nappellate division, or a majority of them. Such salaries shall be\naudited by the state comptroller and paid by the state department of\ntaxation and finance in equal monthly payments when certified to such\ncomptroller by the justice who made the appointment or in case of his\ndeath or disability by any other justice of the tenth judicial district.\nThe total amount of such salaries shall be apportioned by such\ndepartment among the counties of Nassau and Suffolk. Such counties shall\nreimburse the state therefor.  The time and method of such apportionment\nand the time and method of such reimbursement shall be as specified in\nsection seventy-four of this chapter.\n  4. Each of the confidential clerks to the justices of the supreme\ncourt in the fifth judicial district appointed pursuant to subdivision\nfour of section one hundred fifty-seven of this chapter, shall receive\nan annual salary of three thousand dollars; provided, however, that in\ncase of the appointment by such a justice of both a confidential clerk\nand confidential deputy clerk, such confidential clerk and such deputy\nclerk shall each receive an annual salary to be fixed by the justice\nappointing him, or them, not to exceed in the aggregate for both such\nconfidential clerk and deputy clerk the sum of three thousand dollars.\nEach of such salaries shall be audited by the state comptroller and paid\nby the state department of taxation and finance, in equal monthly\npayments when certified to such comptroller by the justice who made the\nappointment or, in case of his death or disability, by any other justice\nof the fifth judicial district. An appropriation in any year for salary\nof such a confidential clerk, to any such justice, shall be available\nfor payment of the salaries of both the confidential clerk and\nconfidential deputy clerk to the same justice, if such be appointed. The\ntotal amount of such salaries shall be apportioned by such department\namong the counties comprising the fifth judicial district. Such counties\nshall reimburse the state therefor.  The time and method of such\napportionment and the time and method of such reimbursement shall be as\nspecified in section seventy-four of this chapter.\n  5. Each of the clerks to the justices of the supreme court in the\nsixth judicial district shall receive an annual salary to be fixed by\nthe
