(1) The department shall designate and, subject to sub. (2), mark the bridge on I 39/90/94 across the Wisconsin River between the towns of Dekorra and Caledonia in Columbia County as the “Veterans of the American Revolution Memorial Bridge,” as a living memorial to and in honor of veterans who are buried in Wisconsin who served this nation in the American Revolution. (2) Upon receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties, including any county, city, village, or town, to cover the costs of erecting and maintaining markers, the department shall erect and maintain, at the 2 interstate rest areas located nearest to the bridge specified in sub. (1), markers identifying the bridge as the “Veterans of the American Revolution Memorial Bridge.” No state funds, other than from the receipt of contributions under this subsection, may be expended for the erection or maintenance of the markers.
