(1) A corporation organized for the construction of a railway, sewer or canal or of any ditch or flume for the conducting of water for irrigation or domestic purposes, or for the purpose of selling water to the public for general purposes for public use, or for conducting potable or waste water by means of pipe laid upon or under the surface of the ground; or desiring to use electrical power in the operation of any railway, shall have a right to enter upon any land, between the termini thereof or elsewhere, for the purpose of examining, locating or surveying the lines of such electric or other railway, sewer, canal, ditch, flume or pipeline, for the purpose of surveying or measuring any lands or rights appurtenant thereto needed for such purposes, doing no unnecessary damage thereby. (2) Prior to entering upon private land under this section, a person who intends to enter upon the land shall first provide written notice by first class mail to the record owner of the private property of such intent to enter.
