§ 171. Incarcerated individuals to be employed; products of labor of\nincarcerated individuals. 1. The commissioner and the superintendents\nand officials of all penitentiaries in the state may cause incarcerated\nindividuals in the state correctional facilities and such penitentiaries\nwho are physically capable thereof to be employed for not to exceed\neight hours of each day other than Sundays and public holidays.\nNotwithstanding any other provision of this section, however, the\ncommissioner and superintendents of state correctional facilities may\nemploy incarcerated individuals on a volunteer basis on Sundays and\npublic holidays in specialized areas of the facility, including kitchen\nareas, vehicular garages, rubbish pickup and grounds maintenance,\nproviding, however, that incarcerated individuals so employed shall be\nallowed an alternative free day within the normal work week.\n  2. Such labor shall be either for the purpose of the production of\nsupplies for said institutions, or for the state, or any political\nsubdivision thereof, or for any public institution owned or managed and\ncontrolled by the state, or any political subdivision thereof; or for\nthe purpose of industrial training and instruction, or partly for one,\nand partly for the other of such purposes.\n
