§ 8.05. Objectives. The New York state writers' institute shall:\n 1. Establish an arts and cultural program for the study of creative\nwriting in the context of literary criticism, the humanities and other\ncreative arts;\n 2. Hire such writers, artists and other personnel as may be necessary\nfor programs, courses, workshops, lectures and readings to encourage the\ndevelopment of writing skills in all phases and genres of writing\nincluding fiction, non-fiction, poetry, journalism, playwriting and\nscreenwriting;\n 3. Offer such scholarships, grants and awards in writing as may help\ndevelop the talent of writers and the craft of writing;\n 4. Offer programs for teachers and high school students in New York\nthat will serve to train them in the craft of writing and demonstrate it\nas a complement to other areas of education;\n 5. Authorize the trustees of the state university to accept, on behalf\nof the institute, gifts, contributions and bequests of unrestricted\nfunds from individuals, foundations, corporations and other\norganizations or institutions for the purpose of furthering the\ninstitute's objectives;\n 6. Offer at least one lecture annually by a distinguished writer on an\naspect of the creative imagination which will further the objectives of\nthe institute's programs and which will enrich the community's exposure\nto the arts;\n 7. Establish and maintain such publications, records and documents as\nmay help arts audiences for the future and stimulate and aid the craft\nof writing;\n 8. Foster cooperation among programs for writers in New York,\nincluding workshops that will serve to enhance continued development in\nthe craft of writing and to increase opportunities for writers in New\nYork state; and\n 9. Develop other programs that will enhance the craft of writing and\nopportunities for writers.\n
