The city marshal shall, under the mayor, have the control and direction of the police of the city; shall attend upon the mayor and aldermen when required; shall be, by virtue of his office, constable and conservator of the peace; and in the absence or disability of the mayor shall have the same powers for the preservation of the peace as the mayor.
