Moderate sedation means a drug-induced depressed level of consciousness, produced by a pharmacologic or nonpharmacologic method or a combination thereof, during which: 1. The patient retains the ability to respond purposefully to verbal commands, either alone or accompanied by light tactile stimulation; 2. Spontaneous ventilation is adequate and no interventions are required to maintain a patent airway; and 3. Cardiovascular function is usually maintained.
