1. If the director shall offer his or her resignation within 5 days after the filing of the petition, the resignation shall be accepted, and the vacancy thereby caused shall be filled in the manner provided by law. 2. If the director does not resign, he or she shall continue to perform the duties of the office until the result of the special election is finally declared.
