1. A law enforcement officer or a duly authorized employee of a law enforcement agency must, as soon as practicable, search the Next-of-Kin Registry for an emergency contact person of a driver or passenger in a motor vehicle if the driver or passenger: (a) Possesses a Nevada drivers license, identification card or driver authorization card; (b) Has been involved in a motor vehicle crash which results in the death, serious bodily injury or other incapacitation of the driver or passenger; and (c) Is incapable of communicating. 2. Except as otherwise provided in subsection 3, if the law enforcement officer or the duly authorized employee of a law enforcement agency identifies an emergency contact person of a driver or passenger through the Next-of-Kin Registry pursuant to this section, the officer or employee must make a reasonable attempt to notify the emergency contact person, as soon as practicable, of the hospital or other location at which the driver or passenger may be located. 3. In the event of the death of a driver or passenger in a motor vehicle crash, the law enforcement officer or the duly authorized employee of a law enforcement agency shall coordinate the notification of the emergency contact person with the coroner or medical examiner, as applicable. Such notification may only be made after the positive identification of the decedent. 4. A coroner or medical examiner or a duly authorized employee of a coroner or medical examiner may access the Next-of-Kin Registry to search for the next-of-kin of a decedent if the decedent possessed a Nevada drivers license, identification card or driver authorization card at the time of his or her death.
