1. If a vacancy occurs on the board of directors of a county fire protection district, the remaining directors shall fill the vacancy by appointing a qualified elector who is registered to vote in the district to serve during the rest of the term and until his or her successor is elected and qualified. 2. If the remaining directors fail or refuse to appoint a new director within 30 days after the vacancy occurs, the board of county commissioners shall appoint a person to fill the vacancy.
