2-6-1112 . Historic records -- Montana historical society -- powers and duties. To ensure the proper management and safeguarding of historic records, the Montana historical society shall: (1) establish and operate the state archives as authorized by appropriation for the purpose of storing, preserving, and providing access to historic records transferred to the custody of the state archives; (2) in cooperation with the secretary of state, the local government records committee, and the state records committee, establish guidelines to inventory, catalog, retain, transfer, and provide access to all historic records; (3) maintain and enforce restrictions on access to historic records in the custody of the state archives in accordance with the provisions of this part; and (4) in accordance with the guidelines established pursuant to subsection (2), remove and destroy duplicate records and records considered to have no historical value.
