1. A notary may require payment of any fees specified in section 486.685 prior to performance of a notarial act. 2. Any fees paid to a notary prior to performance of a notarial act shall be nonrefundable if: (1) The notarial act was completed; or (2) In the case of travel fees paid in compliance with subsection 3 of section 486.685 , the notarial act was not completed after the notary traveled to meet the principal because it was prohibited pursuant to section 486.645 , or because the notary knew or had a reasonable belief that the notarial act or the associated transaction was unlawful.
