Missouri Code § 191.605

Department to designate as areas of need — factors to be considered — allocation of appropriated funds.

1. The department shall designate counties, communities, or sections of urban areas as areas of defined need for medical, psychiatric, or dental services when such county, community or section of an urban area has been designated as a primary care health professional shortage area, a mental health care professional shortage area, or a dental health care professional shortage area by the federal Department of Health and Human Services, or has been determined by the director of the department of health and senior services to have an extraordinary need for health care professional services, without a corresponding supply of such professionals.
2. Annually, at least thirty-five percent of the appropriated funds allocated for the Missouri state loan repayment program shall be designated for awards to primary care physicians and general dentists. Any unused portion of such designated funds shall be made available within the same fiscal year to the other types of health professions designated by the department under section 191.600 .
