A. Beginning January 1, 2004, each municipal chief of police who has been either elected or appointed to the position of municipal chief of police shall successfully complete the New Chief Management Course not later than one year after such election or appointment. B. Beginning January 1, 2015, each municipal chief of police shall be required to complete twelve hours of continuing education as approved by the board within every calendar year. C. Failure to comply with this Section shall subject the municipal chief of police to forfeit any benefits provided for in R.S. 40:1667.1 and to the provisions of R.S. 33:381(E) or 385.1(C). D. The provisions of this Subpart shall be effective and the requirements of this Section imposed only if and when sufficient funds are appropriated by the legislature to fund the institute. E. The provisions of this Section shall not apply to any municipal chief of police who has continuous service from January 1, 1983. F. The provisions of Subsection A of this Section shall not apply to any municipal chief of police elected or appointed prior to January 1, 2004. G.(1) The provisions of Subsections A and B of this Section shall also apply to every nonmunicipal chief of police elected or appointed to the position of chief of police on or after January 1, 2012. (2) For purposes of this Subsection, "nonmunicipal chief of police" shall include any chief of police of a board, authority, commission, department, office, division, or agency of the state or any of its political subdivisions, except it shall not include the chief of police of a municipal police department. H. The provisions of this Section shall not apply to the superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, sheriffs, and constables.
