Electronic medical billing and payment

A.(1) The assistant secretary shall adopt rules and regulations regarding the electronic submission, processing, and payment of workers' compensation-related medical bills, in accordance with the Administrative Procedure Act, R.S. 49:950 et seq. (2) Such rules shall take effect no later than January 1, 2012. B. The following groups shall make provisions for such an electronic claims system: (1) Insurance carriers shall accept medical bills electronically submitted by health care providers, in accordance with the rules promulgated. (2) Health care providers shall accept payment of medical claims submitted electronically by insurance carriers, in accordance with the rules promulgated. C. On or after January 1, 2012, the assistant secretary may adopt additional rules and regulations, in accordance with the Administrative Procedure Act, R.S. 49:950 et seq., regarding the electronic exchange of medical claims information. D. Nothing shall prohibit the assistant secretary from promulgating and adopting rules and regulations, in accordance with the Administrative Procedure Act, R.S. 49:950 et seq., regarding the development and implementation of a centralized data warehouse for the collection of medical billing and payment data.
