(1) The records of the Department of Workers' Claims, to the extent that they provide information personally identifying an individual alleging a work -related injury or occupational disease, shall not be open to the public but only to parties satisfying the commissioner of their interest in the records and their right to inspect them. (2) This section shall not prohibit or limit the exchange of public records or the sharing of information between the Department of Workers' Claims and another public agency when the exchange is serving a legitimate governmental need or is necessary in the performance of a legitimate government function, including the investigation of workers' compensation fraud.
