The writ may be served by the sheriff, or by any other person appointed in writing for that purpose by the court or judge by whom it isissued or allowed. If served by any other than the sheriff, the person appointed possesses the same power, and is liable to the same penalty for a nonperformance of the duty, as though the person were the sheriff.
