Superintendent — term — employment of support personnel

1. The board of directors of a school district may employ a superintendent of schools for a term of not to exceed three years. However, the board’s initial contract with a superintendent shall not exceed one year ifthe board isobligated to pay a former superintendent under an §279.20, DIRECTORS — POWERS AND DUTIES 16 unexpired contract. The superintendent shall be the executive officer of the board and have such powers and duties as may be prescribed by rules adopted by the board or by law. Boards of directors may jointly exercise the powers conferred by this section. 2. The board of directors of a school district may delegate the authority to hire support personnel and sign the support personnel employment contracts, ifapplicable, ifthe board adopts a policy authorizing the superintendent to perform such duties and specifying the positions the superintendent isauthorized to fill.For purposes of this subsection, the term “support personnel” includes, but is not limited to, bus drivers, custodians, educational associates, and clerical and food service employees.
