Indiana Code § 9-17-4-10

Designation of special identification number; authority of manufacturer to perform numbering on vehicles or parts

Sec. 10. (a) The bureau shall designate special identification numbers under this chapter in a manner that allows a person to distinguish a special identification number issued by the bureau from any other vehicle identification number.       (b) This chapter does not affect the authority of a manufacturer or a manufacturer's agent, other than a dealer, to perform numbering on vehicles or motor vehicle parts that are removed or changed and then replaced with other numbered motor vehicle parts.
