Sec. 38.5. (a) This section applies on or after January 1, 2024, and only to the legislative body of a town that has a mayor as a result of a reorganization under this article. (b) The town legislative body may hire or contract with competent attorneys and legal research assistants on terms it considers appropriate. (c) Employment of an attorney under this section does not affect an executive department of law of the town. (d) Appropriations for salaries of attorneys and legal research assistants employed under this section may not exceed the appropriations for similar salaries in the budget of an executive department of law.
