Development of policies to improve assessment literacy

Sec. 18. (a) The department, with the approval of the state board, shall develop and implement programs, policies, and procedures necessary to carry out this chapter to: (1) continuously improve teacher, student, parent, and community understanding of assessment results; (2) strategically use data and information from the assessment results to improve student growth and proficiency of all students; (3) instruct teachers and administrators on how formative assessment practices can be used on a daily basis during class instruction; and (4) if a through-year assessment program is administered as described in section 8 of this chapter, advise teachers and administrators on how through-year assessment practices can inform teaching and learning.       (b) The department shall establish requirements for teacher preparation programs (as described in IC 20-28-3-1 (b)) under IC 20-28-3 to improve assessment literacy skills to improve a teacher preparation program student's ability to strategically use data and information from assessment results to improve student growth and proficiency.
