When a sheriff leaves his or her office he or she shall deliver to his or her successor all process, paper and property attached or levied upon except such as he or she is authorized by law to retain, and also the possession of the court house and jail of his or her county, and shall take from his or her successor a receipt, specifying the papers and property so delivered over, and the prisoners in custody, if any--which receipt shall be sufficient indemnity to the person taking the same.
