Upon petition of 50 voters of any district as defined in Section 32-1.3 presented to the board having the control and management of schools, the board shall, at the next regularly scheduled election held in such district cause to be submitted to the voters thereof, in accordance with the general election law, the proposition of "electing a board of education having the powers conferred upon such boards in districts organized under The School Code". The board shall publish notice of such election, in the manner provided by the general election law, which notice may be in the following form: Public notice is hereby given that on (insert date), a referendum will be held at ...., between the hours of ... ..m. and ... ..m. of said day for the purpose of deciding the question of "electing a board of education having the powers conferred upon such boards in districts organized under the School Code". If a majority of the votes cast is in favor of the proposition, then at the time of the next regular election for boards of education, there shall be elected a board of education for the district.
