Notification to owner and law enforcement agency initiating stolen motor vehicle report upon recovery of stolen vehicle

(1) Whenever any law enforcement agency recovers a motor vehicle which has been unlawfully taken from its owner, it shall, within 72 hours, notify, by teletype or by any other speedy means available, the law enforcement agency which initiated the stolen vehicle report of the recovery. The law enforcement agency which initiated the stolen vehicle report shall, within 7 days after notification, notify, if known, the registered owner, the insurer, and any registered lienholder of the vehicle of the recovery. (2) If notification has not been made within the 7-day period by the initiating agency, then notification shall be made immediately by certified letter, return receipt requested, by the law enforcement agency which initiated the stolen vehicle report.
