(1) A county surveyor shall be elected for a term of four years, shall be a professional land surveyor as provided in part 3 of article 120 of title 12, and, except as provided in subsection (2) of this section, shall file an official bond in the office of the county clerk and recorder, to be approved by the board of county commissioners, in the sum of one thousand dollars, conditioned for the faithful discharge of duties. (2) In lieu of the bond required by subsection (1) of this section, a county may purchase crime insurance coverage in an amount not less than ten thousand dollars on behalf of the surveyor to protect the people of the county from any malfeasance on the part of the surveyor while in office.
