Separation of prisoners. Persons committed on criminal process and

detained for trial and persons committed for contempt or upon civil process shall be kept in
rooms separate and distinct from those in which prisoners convicted and under sentence are
confined. This section shall not apply to any county whose jail does not have sufficient room for
such separate confinement.
