(a) A newly elected county sheriff or unopposed candidate for the position of county sheriff may attend a state-funded law enforcement training academy for purposes of training and instruction. (b) The county in which the newly elected county sheriff or unopposed candidate for the position of county sheriff is to be employed shall pay any necessary transportation costs in traveling to and from the state-funded law enforcement training academy.
