(a)(1) This section shall become effective beginning the next term of office of the city council following April 6, 2022. (2) The members of the city council shall receive an annual salary of twenty-eight thousand dollars ($28,000) per year, in lieu of any and all salary, expense allowance, or other compensation now provided by law. (3)a. The city council, by majority recorded roll call vote of the entire elected members of the council conducted not later than six months prior to the next qualifying date for election to the council, may grant to each member of the council an additional expense allowance, payable in equal monthly installments from the general fund of the municipality. b. Any expense allowance granted to the members of the city council shall become salary effective upon the next term of office following the approval of the expense allowance. (4) Notwithstanding any provision of this section or any other provision of the law to the contrary, the total annual compensation of any member of the city council may not exceed the total annual compensation of the mayor. (b) Effective beginning the next term of office of the mayor following April 6, 2022, the mayor shall receive an annual salary of thirty-five thousand ($35,000) dollars, in lieu of any and all salary, expense allowance, or other compensation now provided by law.
