(a)(1) Effective January 16, 2023, the annual salary of the Coroner of Randolph County shall be one thousand dollars ($1,000) per month to be paid from the county general fund. (2) Effective beginning the next term of office of the coroner commencing in January 2027, and each term thereafter, not less than 60 days prior to the first day for qualifying in the election for the term, the Randolph County Commission may increase and set the annual salary of the coroner commencing on the beginning of that term of office, and thereafter, as determined by the county commission. (3) The salaries provided in this subsection shall be in lieu of any other salary, compensation, fees, or allowances provided to the coroner. The coroner shall waive any other fees or compensation in order to receive any salary provided by this section. (4) a. The Randolph County Commission may authorize the coroner to participate in retirement and the county health insurance under the terms and conditions as the county commission may determine and may expend county funds for that purpose. Any benefits provided under this subsection shall be approved by the county commission. b. The Legislature finds that the Coroner of Randolph County is a full-time official and is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to perform the duties of the office. (b)(1) The Randolph County Commission may authorize the coroner to receive reasonable and necessary expenses and supplies as determined by the county commission related to the operations of the office of coroner and the performance of duties of the coroner. The expenses and supplies authorized by this subsection shall be authorized by resolution of the county commission and shall be paid in the same manner as expenses of other county employees are paid or supplies for county employees are purchased or supplied for county employees. (2) In addition to subdivision (1), the county commission may provide the coroner with a stipend to pay a part of the expense of the cost of cell phone service, or in the alternative, may provide the coroner with a cell phone to be used in the performance of the duties of the coroner. (c) After the close of each fiscal year on September 30, and at other times as requested by the county commission, the coroner shall report to the county commission on the operation of the office of coroner. The report shall be in the format as determined by the county administrator.
