Name and Status of Adoptee

(a) A judgment granting a petition for adoption of an adult may order a change in the name of the adoptee unless the court finds that the change of name is requested for fraudulent or criminal purposes; provided, however, that the court may not change the name of an adoptee who is a sex offender as provided in Section 15-20A-36. (b) After the final judgment of adoption, the adoptee shall be treated as the legal child of each adopting parent and shall have all rights and be subject to all the duties arising from that relation. (c) Upon the final judgment of adoption, the biological or legal parents of the adoptee, except for a biological or legal parent who is the spouse of the adopting parent, are relieved of all parental rights and responsibilities for the adoptee.
