C. § 1014 is a crime punishable by up to 30 years in prison, a fine of up to $1,000,000, “or both.” I am convinced that Congress did not intend this draconian statute to apply to immaterial falsehoods, even when made for the purpose of currying favor with a bank’s loan officer.
