Pfeifer, J. {¶ 1} In April 1993, inmates rioted at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility (“SOCF”) in Lucasville, Ohio. During the riot, inmates killed corrections officer Robert Yallandingham. In 1995, James Were, the defendant-appellant, was convicted of aggravated murder for his participation in Vallandingham’s killing and sentenced to death.
